Lets Take A Closer Look At The Ingredients In Our Whey Protein 

Low Temperature Undenatured Whey Protein Concentrate is a form of whey protein typically low in fat & cholesterol, containing high levels of bioactive compounds & growth factors & small amounts of carbohydrates in the form of lactose, & is quickly absorbed by the body. It is also rich in both branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) & glutamine. The term ‘undenatured’ means that the whey is cold processed, rather than being heated at high temperatures, allowing it to maintain all of its amino acids, bioactive compounds & growth factors. The bioactive compounds & growth factors contained within whey protein concentrate provide significant health benefits but must remain in their undenatured form in order to exert these properties.

Low Temperature Undenatured Whey Protein Isolate is a form of whey protein, which has undergone greater processing than whey concentrate. This results in a reduction in bioactive compounds & growth factors, but provides a greater protein content & lower levels of carbohydrates, lactose & fat than whey concentrate. It is also more quickly absorbed by the body than whey protein concentrate.

Low Temperature Undenatured Micellar Casein In contrast to whey protein’s rapid digestion, is referred to as a ‘time-release’ protein because it is digested slowly, feeding your muscles with amino acids at a low level over a period of up to 8 hours after consumption to ensure optimum growth & recovery. Micellar casein protein is very effective for promoting muscle growth & strength, as it not only provides all of the essential amino acids, but also contains a high level of leucine, which initiates muscle protein synthesis. It may also enhance long-term muscle mass by reducing protein breakdown. This process occurs on a daily basis when your body is low on energy & amino acids, & is accelerated during exercise or weight loss. In addition to increasing muscle mass, casein protein has also been shown to help reduce body fat levels. QUESTION

I’ve been using Time 4 Whey Protein for a year or so now and really enjoy it. But I have a technical question. A colleague said today that excess protein is broken down and stored as fat. I’d really appreciate it if you shed some light on this for me.

Thank you for your query and thank you for using Time 4 Nutrition products.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that the primary cause of an increase in body fat, is positive energy balance, i.e.,  consuming more energy, or calories, than we expend.  In theory, excess calories from any of the macronutrients, i.e., protein, fat and carbohydrate, can contribute to an increase in body fat. However, as more energy is required to metabolise protein than fat or carbohydrate it’s not generally considered to be an issue.

The dietary protein you consume is broken down into its basic amino acids, which can be used for tissue growth and repair; they can also be oxidised to provide energy for activity and their carbon skeletons can be used by the body to produce glucose, which in turn can provide energy.

If you are trying to build muscle, it is vital that you consume the recommended amount of protein per kg/day. If you don’t, you are unlikely to maximise muscle growth. Interestingly, the International Society of Sports Nutrition in their Position Stand on Protein and Exercise (see link below) suggests higher protein intakes (>3.0 g/kg/d) may have positive effects on body composition in resistance-trained individuals, i.e., promote loss of fat.

Therefore, it is essential that you not only consume the recommended amount of protein but ensure that your energy intake is appropriate for your needs. If you consume too many calories you’ll gain fat; if you don’t consume enough, you won’t grow.

It is important to note that it is extremely difficult to balance your diet so perfectly that you gain a significant amount of muscle naturally without any body fat. Typically, a bodybuilder will have a mass phase, during which their diet and training are tailored to maximise muscle growth. Once, this has been achieved, they will make the requisite changes to their diet and training to focus on optimising a reduction in body fat while maintaining muscle.

QUESTION

Would you also please confirm whether or not Time 4 Whey Protein is suitable for use in cooking/baking.  Essentially, the question is – does it become denatured by the application of heat?

REPLY

Just to confirm, cooking would damage/denature peptides and certain amino acids in the product for sure. Dairy powders labelled as heat stable have already been damaged and have had their denatured proteins already removed by further processing. A confusing marketing ploy often used by companies is to equate solubility with purity or bioavailability. Whilst solubility certainly improves the uptake of many natural ingredients (e.g.

flavonoids), when it comes to dairy proteins, ease of blending is a pretty reliable indicator of degree of processing, -the damaged peptides have been removed and what’s left has been agglomerated with lecithin to produce “instantised” whey for example. This in itself isn’t a problem when you’re primarily looking for quality AND convenience, but when you cook amino acids then conformational stability deteriorates and folding occurs, leading to reduced absorption and formation of antinutritional factors (e.g. lysinoalanine) that also reduce the uptake of other amino acids too.
