L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative, which the body can produce from of the amino acids lysine and methionine. In addition to the L-carnitine produced in the body, we can also obtain small amounts by eating animal products like meat and fish. Those eating a plant-based diet or with certain genetic issues may be unable to produce or obtain sufficient amounts. L-carnitine plays an important role in mitochondrial function and energy production, as it helps transport fatty acids into the mitochondria where they can be metabolised for energy. It has also been shown to add fat loss.
